The incident left two people dead—the gunman and an audience member—and two others critically injured. State police said the victims were all men, but their names have not been released.
The Secret Service confirmed Trump is now safe and was checked at a local hospital before being released a few hours later. Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., told CBS News that his father is “doing fine.”
The U.S. Secret Service stated, “U.S. Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased.”
Reporters on the scene heard numerous gunshots, prompting Secret Service agents to rush the stage and protect Trump. CBS News captured video of Trump touching his ear and then crouching to the ground, with some blood visible on his face.
At a news conference late Saturday night, Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI Pittsburgh office, said authorities are investigating the shooting as an “attempted assassination.” He added that there are no known ties to foreign terrorism, and the suspect was not previously known to law enforcement.
According to multiple law enforcement sources, the gunman used a semi-automatic AR-15 and fired from the top of a shed outside the Secret Service’s security perimeter, about 400 feet away from the stage. The ATF is tracing the weapon.
Rojek mentioned that it was “surprising” the gunman managed to fire multiple shots. He did not provide further details about the investigation but noted that suspicious packages were found near the shooter’s location, prompting bomb squads to clear the area.
It remains unclear if any explosive devices were found. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to learn more about the shooter and his motives.
